Position Summary:
Provides for the health and well-being of laboratory animals through provision of skilled veterinary health care, technical support and quality assurance programs for surgical and non-surgical research projects under the supervision of the team leader and veterinarian. Ensures compliance with federal, state and institutional laws, policies and regulations.
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Peri-operative and post-operative care of critical and non-critical veterinary surgical patients Provides anesthetic induction, and anesthesia support of research related surgical procedures.
2. Prepares and maintains operating rooms and equipment for surgical procedures.
3. Performs daily health rounds, patient care, environmental enrichment, treatment administration and diagnostic tests; provides technical assistance in research projects. Maintains accurate and detailed records of patient care, treatment administration and other required documentation.
4. Performs procedures required for quality assurance, preventative health care, and health surveillance including rodent sentinel testing, primate TB testing, diagnostic and surgical equipment maintenance, and surgery and husbandry quality control testing.
5. Trains research staff in laboratory animal methodology courses; trains and provides oversight of veterinary technology student interns.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
LVT (Licensed Veterinary Technician) preferred. Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification required within one year of employment.
Minimum Education:
Associates Degree from AVMA Accredited program or equivalent years of experience in lieu of education.
Minimum Experience:
One (1) year of related experience.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
Security Sensitive:
This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code 51.215 and Texas Government Code 411.094. Residency Requirement:
Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
