Position Profile

This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.

Description of Duties / Essential Functions

Enforces traffic control requirements to ensure traffic safety and mobility at and in the vicinity of street/lane/sidewalk closures. Provides general coordination in enforcing the understanding and technical application of codes, ordinances and technical specifications for infrastructure construction, structures and systems. Meets with inspectors, general public, contractors, technical professionals, and businesses to respond to inquiries / investigations and technical problems for lane/sidewalk closures, special events, sidewalk cafs, and valet zones. Performs record?keeping activities to maintain filing system, reports and documentation; researches and evaluates plans, specifications, drawings/traffic control plans.

Working Conditions

This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds), and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.

Minimum Requirements

  • Educational: Requires a high school diploma/GED, and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.
  • Experience: Two years of journey level or skilled experience related to the area of inspection to be performed.
  • License: May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houstons policy on driving.
  • Preferences: Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
  • Veteran Preferences: Preference may be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for.


Selection / Skills Tests Required

None; however, the Department may administer a skills assessment evaluation.

Yes. If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing. If a promotional position, candidate must pass a particular assignment drug test.

Salary Information

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidates qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. Pay Grade: 18.
