Position Description
Caretaker General Summary:

Under General Supervision, perform duties related to grounds maintenance of county parks, equipment and facilities. Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks involving the maintenance and repair of park and recreation facilities and equipment. Operate tractors, vehicles and other small equipment to maintain park appearance.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools in park landscape maintenance work.
  • Clean and maintain facilities including park restrooms, pavilions and grounds such as litter and trash pick up.
  • Assist with special events and routine group reservations such as setting up tables, chairs and equipment.
  • May assist in other sections of the department as necessary; is required to respond during natural disasters and/or times of emergencies.

Requirements
Education:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution
Experience:
  • One (1) year of experience in grounds maintenance and operating mowing equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of general construction tools and equipment with safe work practices.
  • The ability to perform heavy manual labor, learn to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with those contacted in the work day.
  • Ability to diffuse escalating situations.
  • Ability to operate a smartphone and tablet to inspect equipment and submit work orders and safety issues.

General Information
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • Full-time | Regular
  • Our parks are open 365 days of the year. The Parks Department works 4-10 hour shifts. Hours/days may vary based on business needs of the department and some weekend, evening hours or holidays will be required during special events or in times of emergency response/preparedness.

  • Reports to: Foreman or Park Manager
    Supervises: None
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).
  • Some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards, dust, toxic and chemicals, and confined space work, using proper safety precautions.
  • This is a physically active position which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and requires moderate physical exertion and exposure to dangerous tools and equipment and hazardous chemicals and pesticides.


Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
